Matched set

What is a matched set?

A matched set can be a pair of drums or more drums, that were made from the same material with the intention to be played musically as a group.
Making drums this way ensures that the timbre and the aesthetics are constant throughout the group.
Such a set can be made from a single wood, from two contrasting woods like the classic twotones from the 60s. The important thing is that each drum in the family contains material from the same mother source.

Create your own matched set

Do you want a seasons matched pair or set made from your favourite wood? All you have to do is ask. I have routinely made 3 and 4 drum sets ( the classic quinto, conga, tumba or requinto, quinto, conga, tumba). The most I have done is 5 for now (requinto, quinto, conga, tumba, tumba).
This depends very much on the wood that is available. Ask for a quote.

Matched set in Cypress

After having made the set in acacia I received many positive comments about the sound and the new hardware. The only thing that wasn't received well by all was the weight. So in 2010 I embarked on this journey trying to create a set that was as lightweight as possible. The result is this set in cypress. The shells have thinner walls making them very lively especially at higher tunings. This set is comprised of a 9.75 inch requinto, a 11 inch quinto and a 11.75 inch conga. This particular set is on display as part of the collection at the Fondazione Luigi Tronci in Pistoia.

Matched pair in Mahogany

This set was made in july of 2021. The wood for this set came from a reclaimed slab of mahogany. I do not normally use exotic woods but in the case of reclaimed lumber I do not see any harm in doing so, it is after all beautiful material and it would be a waste not to use it for something beautiful. This set is comprised of an 11.75 inch conga and a 12.5 inch tumbadora. The skins are both cow and were tanned in tuscany. The conga skin is 3.2 to 3.5 mm thick and the tumba skin is 3.5 to 4 mm thick.

Matched set of three in Acacia

This group of drums is from 2009 and is the first matched set I have ever made. It is also the first set to sport the turned stainless steel hardware. This set is special to me as it marks a turning point in my approach to drum building. They have also been to all the tradeshows and fairs that we have done. The requinto is a true screamer and an interesting note, the skins were tucked with the help of israeli percussionist “Liron Meyuhas”
